We all live in relationships with others. Living abroad means a change to those relationships. Some relationships end, and others are newly formed. The relationships that we have with ourselves also changes.
Life as an expat can be exciting. But it isn’t always easy.
Perhaps you…
- miss your own culture and language,
- are feeling lonely or uprooted,
- are overwhelmed by the adjustment to a new culture,
- find everyday life difficult, because everything around you is new and unfamiliar.
Or you may feel that you’ve found a new home abroad, yet still want to explore issues and challenges connected with the expat life.
We need a long time to adjust to a new culture. Small tasks can become overwhelming. Cultural nuances are difficult if not impossible to grasp. Humour is different, and jokes may not seem funny. Unspoken rules around closeness and distance are unfamiliar.
